George Washington, the first president of the United States, was first named commander in chief of the colonial armed forces by the delegates of the Second Continental Congress at the beginning of the Revolutionary war. He is well known during this time for enduring the hardships of Valley Forge with his troops.
Soon after the Constitution was ratified and a new government was set in place, Washington was elected president. He worked on making a strong court system and introducing new economic plans for the unstable country. He was against the formation of political parties and made a point to stay neutral in arguments or wars between other countries.
His image is on the quarter and the one dollar bill. George Washington will also appear on the new dollar coin, along with all the other former Presidents who have died. (to be on American currency you have to be dead for 2 years)
